“Hardships are not my excuse.” These words, spoken by one of the protagonists, capture the spirit of the documentary: the persistence of those who, despite structural gaps, walk with dignity toward a better future.

Challenge

Academic knowledge about social inequality and higher education risked staying within technical circles, without amplifying the real voices of first-generation students or reaching wider audiences.

Solution

Mosaico created El Viaje (The Journey), a 16-minute short documentary that turns research into an emotional experience, centering the life stories of students who face structural gaps with dignity and perseverance.

The film follows Ana, Erika and Vanesa, first-generation university students who tell, in their own words, the social, economic and emotional barriers they have faced on their way to higher education.

Through an intimate, visually warm narrative, the documentary turns academic research into an audiovisual piece that stirs emotions, builds empathy and puts its protagonists’ dignity at the center.

The audiovisual format humanizes research and connects emotionally with diverse audiences. A well-told short documentary doesn’t just inform, it transforms: it builds bridges between academia and the community, between data and people, between public policy and real stories.

A story of persistence, dignity and transformation in higher education.

Short documentary, audiovisual storytelling based on real testimonies, and the project’s visual identity.

Color palette

The visual identity of the short documentary “El Viaje”, produced for the Institución Universitaria Colegio Mayor de Antioquia, draws on COLMAYOR’s institutional color palette, reinterpreted through a narrative, emotional and transformative lens. These colors aim to visually reflect the diversity, dignity and persistence of first-generation students as they move through higher education.
